Feed drive systems with perpendicularly configured axes are commonly used in machine tool systems. Although orthogonal errors to desired cutting paths (contour errors) are important in machining, tracking errors with respect to each feed-drive axis are usually used in conventional control systems. In this paper, we propose a new controller design that can reduce the contour errors based on a complete coordinate transformation. Since it is difficult to calculate accurate contour errors online, we firstly define approximate contour errors for three-axis feed drive systems. Then we show a controller design that can reduce the contour errors independent of errors along the desired cutting paths. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by experimental results.
