In this paper, a structural optimization based on the level set method using mathematical programming is proposed. Topology optimization has been successfully applied to a variety of structural optimization problems such as the stiffness maximization problem, vibration problems and optimum design for compliant mechanism. However, due to its high flexibility, the utility of topology optimization results is often spoiled by a preponderance of impractical designs such as structures containing grayscale areas. To overcome such problems, a type of structural optimization method using the level set boundary expression has been proposed, in which the boundary of the optimal configuration are implicitly represented using the level set function. In the proposed method, the level set function is updated using a mathematical programming. We apply our method to a simple design problem to verify its capability.
