Ni-YSZ anodes of solid oxide fuel cells are manufactured using an infiltration method with a silver mirror reaction, instead of the conventional co-sintering method. The infiltration method has several advantages in terms of controlling electrode microstructures because the manufacturing processes of Ni and YSZ are independent. From electrochemical impedance measurement and FIB-SEM microstructural analysis, Ni-YSZ anodes manufactured by the infiltration method (electro-infiltration anodes) are found to have better initial performance than conventional anodes. Moreover, sufficient connectivity of Ni phase is achieved with a smaller amount of Ni phase. On the other hand, the performance of the electro-infiltration anodes is not stable over time due to low cohesive energy of Ag and Ni particles within the anodes; the degradation rate of the anode performance is higher under higher temperature and higher humidification.
