Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) achieves higher thermal efficiency and lower nitrogen oxides emissions in internal combustion engines compared to conventional combustion systems. However, applicability of HCCI is restricted because it has no mechanical ignition system and its ignition timing depends on chemical reactions. This study aimed to control the ignition timing in HCCI combustion of diethylether by adding hydrogen having a lower autoignition quality than diethylether. Experimental results show that both low and high temperature heat releases can be effectively retarded by the hydrogen addition, and thermal efficiency tends to increase with hydrogen fraction.
