Abstract
In the present experiment investigated the dynamics of a single, rising air bubble in a linear shear layer. In particular we sought to understand the influence of the force on the bubble and its lateral motion as induced by the surrounding flow field. We explored the flow structure in the vicinity of the bubble and also deformation of the bubble's interface, respectively by PIV/LIF and a projection technique in two perpendicular planes. We determined that the bubble trajectory was influenced by the three-dimensional vorticity distribution in the wake. By measuring the wake vorticity distribution, along with the relative orientation of the bubble, we estimated the pending dynamic trajectory of its rising motion.
