Abstract
This paper proposes a novel surgical tool for ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection). The proposed device based on the principles of the PBA (Pneumatic Balloon Actuator). It is possible to design a small, soft and safe surgical tool by using PBA, which is made of PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) and driven by pneumatic pressure. ESD has recently been established and appears to be a more reliable endoscopic therapy than EMR. ESD enables the en bloc resection of affected mucosa, however, this method requires more endoscopic skill and carries a high risk of complications such as haemorrhage and perforation. It is significant to dissect the mucosa under observing the submucosa to prevent these complications. The proposed device makes it possible to perform sequential motions through independent control of different PBAs, thus allowing for the insertion to the incised part and the removal of mucosa. The proposed ESD retractor enables to resect the mucosa under observing the submucosa by holding the resected mucosa to the side.
