Abstract
We demonstrate mixing of two solutions by ciliary motion of Vorticella canvallaria. We fabricated a micromixer channel located Vorticella in the channel. After the cells adhered, two solutions were introduced. One of the solutions contained fluorescent particles with a diameter of 0.5μm to visualize mixing. Vorticella mixed the low diffusion coefficient of particles in the channel. Mixing of the particles progressed as a flow moved downstream. To quantify the mixing performance, an intensity profile across the flow channel was characterized and a mixing index was defined. The index decreased from 0.56 to 0.28 in 2,400μm, which shows that the particles were mixed by Vorticella.
