Abstract

In this study, we have been working on system construction for production of contractile artificial muscle fibers and preparation of muscle cell-encapsulated gel fiber based on the system. By using a microfluidic device capable of continuously producing gel fibers to promote anisotropic cell growth, a gel fiber having a width of about 50 μm was prepared, and muscle cells were enclosed therein and restrained in the cell growth direction. We also attempted to increase the volume and cell density by winding up and integrating its myocyte-encapsulating gel fiber. Even though it was in the initial stage of culturing by culturing the prepared integrated gel fiber in a state of being fixed between the pillars, it was shown that approximately 70% of the number of cultured cells was as high as 4 degrees in angular difference from the gel fiber axis cellular growth with directionality.
