Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a motion sensor system which can measure 3D posture of a paddle as well as propulsive paddle force for kayak paddlers. The system has an inertial sensor to calculate paddle kinematics, and strain gauges are used to measure the force applied to the paddle. In an experiment, a customized paddle equipped with the developed sensor system was used to measure the paddling performance of some athletes with different age and technical skills. The acquired data would be helpful for evaluating the paddling technique and spotting technical flaws to improve the performance of kayak paddlers.
