Bell ringing on New Year’s Eve (Joya no Kane) has long been a traditional event in Japan. Recently however, “Joya no Kane” has often been cancelled due to the noise problem. To inherit this traditional event, we built a system called “KANETSUKI-VR.” The system provides the experience of bell ringing by visual, auditory, and haptic sensations. Important aspects in the experience of bell ringing include massive feeling of the wooden bell hammer and the impulsive force when the hammer hits the bell. We achieved these sensations by accumulating the kinetic momentum using flywheels and implementing a mechanism to reverse the direction of motion instantaneously. We used multiple electromagnetic clutch in our reversal mechanism.
