We have developed a tongue-operated joystick device for tongue mobility training and rehabilitation. This device has the ability to sense operational distance and forces in both horizontal and vertical directions. Additionally, adjustable viscoelastic resistance allows individual tailoring of training intensity. In this paper, we investigated the fundamental performances regarding to the ability of sensing forces and the traceability to fast tongue operation. These results show that the device can estimate the operation force accurately and trace the movement up to 5Hz. Moreover, the changes in tongue operation for viscoelastic resistance are also analyzed and confirmed the effectiveness for tongue training.
