Abstract

Soft robotics has emerged as a prominent area of research in recent years, leveraging additive manufacturing techniques to achieve innovative designs. Utilizing geometric configurations, soft robotics can exhibit distinctive mechanical behaviors characteristic of metamaterials, including negative Poisson’s ratio or negative stiffness. Metamaterials, engineered artificial structures, offer properties not found in naturally occurring materials, thus enhancing the capabilities of soft robotics. Hydrogels, known for their unique deformable mechanical properties and porous chemical structure, have been integrated into soft robotics to tailor actuation systems. This synergistic combination has led to applications in various fields, including medical devices, human-machine interfaces, and tasks requiring gentle and adaptable robotic manipulation. This work highlights the integration of hydrogels and metamaterials in soft robotics, showcasing their potential for advancing technology across diverse domains.
