One of the factors that prevents the practical application of layer jamming technology that can adjust rigidity using vacuum pressure is the lack of a mechanical model, which requires empirical design. Many parameters of sheets and membranes such as the shape and materials affect the mechanical properties of layer jamming systems. Moreover, the softness and complexity of the shape transformation of layered sheets cause difficulties in measuring and evaluating the rigidity. This paper describes the practical issues in developing and modeling layer jamming systems that are rarely mentioned in papers and various factors that affect the rigidity of layer jamming systems.
