The authors reproduced a seizing phenomenon, that is one type of damage that occurred on a slide bearing in a failure reproduction test. To examine the detectability of any predictive phenomenon of damage, oil film thickness, bearing temperature, AE, and vibration of a slide bearing were measured, respectively. The results showed a close relation between increased damage and oil film thickness. Additionally, AE is generated when the oil film thickness lowers to a certain value. Any damage on a slide bearing is considered to be predictable by means of monitoring the change in oil film thickness by applying the AE method.
