We are often getting sleepy in cars or on trains. It's just conceivable that using this phenomenon we put infants to sleep without any invasion. This will reduce the burdens of parental care. The purpose of this study is to find out the sleep-inducing factor, and to develop a machine which reproduces the environment to put babies to sleep. For the first step of our study, we focused on mechanical vibration on trains because we sometimes get sleepy on board. To clarify the relationship between the mechanical vibrations and sleepiness, we established the sleep judging system from abdominal motion with breathing. And then we measured the vibrations on trains. We categorized the trains into comfortable and uncomfortable groups for sleep. After vibration analyses, the results suggest that low-frequency vibration largely contributes to sleepiness.
