Power generation characteristics and temperature fields of single cell of a planar type SOFC fed with either air or pure oxygen as oxidant are numerically investigated. It is found that when pure oxygen is supplied to the cathode side we can reduce its flow rate without affecting the cell power generation performance. Reducing the oxygen flow rate, however, results in a larger temperature difference of the cell between upstream and downstream due to insufficient cooling effect by the oxidant flow showing needs for additional cooling methods for a system run with pure oxygen.
