Abstract

The conventional solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems fueled with hydrogen or ammonia always underperform in comparison to the SOFCs fueled with hydrocarbon fuels. This paper deals with the energy and exergy based studies of novel 100% fuel utilization SOFC systems achieved by 100% recycling of anode off-gas (referred to as dead-end anode, DEA). The results show that the energy efficiency of H2 fueled and NH3 fueled SOFC systems can reach efficiencies as high as 67.22 % and 72.52 % LHV, respectively. In addition, a detailed exergy based comparison is performed to understand the various irreversibilities in a stack and at the system level.
