It has become clear from recent studies that the box type structure constituted of aluminum hollow extrusions is effective as a crashworthiness structure for railroad vehicles. When setting on a vehicle end as a shock absorber, a rig hole is needed in order to let various piping through it. In this paper, it is shown the static compression experiment using a moire method and the finite element method that the rig hole has influenced on axial crush. And the optimization of the hole shape to the buffer characteristic is considered.
