This study considers assessment quantities, such as derailment quotient, to evaluate running safety against flange climb derailment in curves of conventional lines. Relationship between derailment quotient and wheel rise of an outer wheel is investigated with data of running tests at low speeds in a test track with sharp curves and some intended track irregularities, which might cause derailment. As a result, a proper filtering of derailment quotient, which corresponds to the change of wheel rise is shown, and further, a new assessment quantity is proposed, which is based on time history of derailment quotient.
