Abstract

Flange climb derailment is a derailment that occurs when the wheel flanges gradually climb up the rail. Here, the moving distance of the contact point between the wheel and the rail from when the wheel flange starts to climb the rail to the top of the rail is referred to as the climb length. This study investigated the causes of climb length due to wheel load imbalances using a model bogie experiment. As a result, it was found that the magnitude of the wheel load imbalance is likely to be a factor that increases or decreases the climb length.
