High-strength spheroidal graphite cast iron (H-FCD) has excellent vibration damping properties, and when applied to gears, it is thought to be effective in reducing meshing vibration and noise in drive devices. In addition, gas nitriding of this material is expected to achieve a practical strength for railway gears. In this study, we summarized the experimental results of nitriding treatment and each issue at the raw material level in gear development. We report on the effect on fatigue strength when nitride gear raw materials have casting defects, the evaluation of pitting resistance by high surface pressure rotation test of durability test gears, and the effect of nitriding treatment on the tooth profile accuracy of actual vehicle gears.
