Abstract
This paper deals with the Thames Tunnel designed by Marc Isambard Brunel, 1769-1849,and co-worked by his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 1806-1859. The Thames Tunnel is the first thoroughfare sub-river tunnel produced by bricks, 1202ft long, built between 1825 and 1843,joining Rotherhithe and Wapping beneath the Thames in East London. Although Marc invented a shielding device for 'Forming Tunnels or Drifts Under Ground' in 1818,he changed the cylindrical shield into the rectangular shield and applied. It is due to that the Thames Tunnel had two parallel roadways. The project had experienced so many accidents, but had finally succeeded. The shield, presently, has been become a standard for tunneling.
