A research section on the history and engineering of Brunels has been established in the Division of Technology & Society, the JSME, in November, 2003. The research section focuses into the great engineers of Marc Isambard Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel who left the valuable works that formed a lot of epochs in civil engineering in the 19 century. The aim and scope of the research section is to collect and evaluate their efforts from the standpoint of history of engineering, and to inform the summarized materials to public as paper, publication, and digital archives. The investigation is done on the recognition about what degree of false step is caused by the students, when the teachers of Arts course at Junior High School guided metalworking work. Survey items are "the degree of false step of the student", "the Necessity for study" and "the existence of instruction experiences of teacher". The investigation was done about the false step of student by the questionnairings and the interviews to the teachers. As the result, there were the correlations between "the degree of the false step of student and the existence of the instruction experience of teacher", "the Necessity for study and the existence of instruction experiences of teacher", and "the degree of false step of student and the necessity for learning".

This study clarifies whether the practical engineering education reflects the class for the student as how interesting thing. Four cases on them are shown and mentioned below, (1) the performance of hybrid system by wind power and photovoltaic power generation, (2) the performance of the educational Stirling engine, (3) the performance of the temperature characteristic of double tube heat exchanger, (4) the performance of the mini wind force car in creation and practical training. The present paper has clarified the effectiveness in teaching and has tried its argumentation.

This paper describes how we, the Kochi University of Technology, educate 3D-CAD design. In the past, design education using drafters was common. However, 3D-CAD education has become more common due to the recent trend of cheap software and more convenient computer tools. The issues to be considered for the education are selection of a text, study hours including homeworks, and how students can learn by themselves. The text is the one for design of manual winch, hours as actual results were 4 hours including 1.5 hours in class for each lecture, and students needed to learn by themselves following the instruction by teaching assistants.

This paper deals with the Thames Tunnel designed by Marc Isambard Brunel, 1769-1849,and co-worked by his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 1806-1859. The Thames Tunnel is the first thoroughfare sub-river tunnel produced by bricks, 1202ft long, built between 1825 and 1843,joining Rotherhithe and Wapping beneath the Thames in East London. Although Marc invented a shielding device for 'Forming Tunnels or Drifts Under Ground' in 1818,he changed the cylindrical shield into the rectangular shield and applied. It is due to that the Thames Tunnel had two parallel roadways. The project had experienced so many accidents, but had finally succeeded. The shield, presently, has been become a standard for tunneling.

The first domestically-built electric locomotive is said as locomotive which used at the Ashio Copper Mine of Tochigi Prefecture. Wheel arrangement of this electric locomotive was 0-4-0,and built in 1893 by the Ashio Copper Mine Works. Later, this works renamed as Ashio Seisakusho and later renamed again as Furukawa Kikai Kinzoku Co.. In addition to this example, other five examples of electric locomotive building are introduced. They are as follows, 1) The 0-4-0 mine-type electric locomotive built in 1911 by Hitachi Ltd, 2) The Class ED40 (former Class 10020) 0-8-0 Apt-type electric locomotive built in 1919 by Omiya Works of Railway Agency (later, Ministry of Railway), 3) The Class ED15 (former Class 1070) 0-4・4-0 trunk-line electric locomotive for freight trains built in 1924 by Hitachi Ltd., 4) The Class EF52 4-6・6-4 trunk-line electric locomotive for passenger services designed in 1928 by Ministry of Railway., 5) The No.1 0-4・4-0 convex-type electric locomotive built in 1916 by the Sakai Higashi Works of Osaka Koya Railway (later, Nankai Electric Railway).
