Shonan Institute of Technology offers a course, entitled "Introduction to Emerging, High Technologies," for undergraduate students at all engineering departments. In each year, freshmen constitute a majority of a total of about three hundred course attendees. The purpose of this course was to brief the students on the subject, with the introduction of new technologies, which had been and/or were being under research and development (R & D) mainly at industry, so that they can familiarize themselves with trends of the emerging, high technologies, intended to be utilized in the market. The first author taught the subject course for Fall Semester of Fiscal Year 2005, and conducted a variety of surveys for the students to investigate their interest and motivation in learning the emerging, high technologies, industrial areas of their interest, their career interest, etc. As a result of this study, the authors reached a conclusion that it would be desirable to combine discussion of general trends of the eight, major science and technology areas, defined by White Paper on Science and Technology, and explanation of relationship between technology, society, industry, and the market, among others, in addition to the ongoing, specific presentations of the new technologies, for the students to gain broader perspectives in considering and choosing their future directions for their research and career.
