This work presents a practical and quantitative technique for assessment infancy damages in a structure by measuring the impedance change of piezoelectric patches which were glued on the structure. Further, the consideration of longitudinal wave propagation in structures is introduced for the purpose to select suitable frequency regions for assessment of damage characteristics. It is shown that the damage location and the small stress change in the structure can be simply determined by measuring the PZTs electric impedance and comparing with the strain mode shape functions as a longitudinal wave propagates in the healthy structure.
