Abstract
This study aims to reveal the processes of language inheritance and identity construction/transformation among second generation Chinese newcomers who were born and raised in Japan. Specifically, data drawn from life-story interviews with the participants was analyzed using the TEM. Four characteristics of the participants’ identities were identified: autonomy of language ID, complexity of ethnic ID, Confucianism of role ID, cultural-mediation/flexibility of integrated ID. Moreover, important others, a tendency to move, learning of the inheritance language, and macro social changes were shown to have a significant influence on the processes of identity construction/transformation. This study highlights the fact that learning and using one’s heritage language is linked to identity and reveals that it is essential to acquire the confidence to say “I can” in the process of growth, based on positive self-esteem toward one's origins.
