Interleukin 12 (IL-12) plays an important role in anti-tumor immune response by the induction of interferon- γ (IFN γ) production by Tcells and NK cells, and by activation of cytotoxic T cells and NK cells. IL-12-induced IFN- γ production was evaluated in vitro in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from hepatocellular carcinoma patients(HCC), chronic hepatitis patients(CH), liver cirrhosis patients (LC) and healthy individuals (HI). There were not significant differences in clinical background between HCC and LC. HCC exhibited the reduced responsive IFN γ production compared to CH, LC and HI. IFN γ production correlated with neither a-fetoprotein nor PIVKA-II.
