Purpose: The purpose of this case report was to describe the course of physiotherapy using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) Keyform for a patient with impaired balance function.
Case: This case involves a male aged 50-59 years who had balance impairment after a right capsular hemorrhage and was treated conservatively.
Methods: Evaluation using the BBS Keyform was performed once every two weeks from Day 49 to Day 91 after onset, and balance tasks of optimal difficulty were selected. The intervention content was reviewed by identifying, integrating, and interpreting the problems associated with the selected tasks.
Results: One month after the intervention using the BBS Keyform, the BBS score improved by 11 points from 41 (Day 49) to 52 points (Day 77), resulting in walking independence without the use of a prosthetic device. On Day 91, the patient achieved a perfect score of 56 on the BBS. At the discharge evaluation on Day 113, the patient was fully independent in performance of activities of daily living. Additionally, the use of the Keyform influenced the content and time allocation of physiotherapy, as well as the patient's subjective perception of balance improvement.
Conclusion: This case report describes physiotherapy practice and course of treatment using the BBS Keyform, which showed improvement in balance function and changes in the content and time allocation of physiotherapy.
