The diagnosis and treatment responses for the variants of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) were described. Clinical criteria for multifocal CIDP are the sensory loss and muscle weakness in a multifocal distribution in more than one limb. Distal CIDP is defined by the distal sensory loss and muscle weakness predominantly in lower limbs and motor CIDP by symmetric proximal and distal motor weakness without sensory involvement. Previous reports showed that specific complications for each variant, such as central nervous involvements in multifocal CIDP, lymphoproliferative disorders in distal CIDP and inflammatory or malignant disorders in motor CIDP. Motor CIDP tends to respond better to intravenous immunoglobulin therapy (IVIg) than to corticosteroids. However, the difference in treatment responses of IVIg or corticosteroids for other variants is still uncertain. The definition for each variant should be clarified to elucidate specific pathophysiology in CIDP variants.
