The World Stroke Organization (WSO), an international consortium in the field of stroke, was established back in 2006. At that time, the International Stroke Society (ISS, established in 1989), led by the Japan Stroke Association, with participation from Europe and parts of the United States, and the World Stroke Federation (WSF, established in 2004), founded by parts of the United States, coexisted. The mission of the WSO is to raise awareness of stroke prevention and treatment. Annual Scientific Meetings : The World Stroke Congress is being held in Europe, Asia, and North and South America on a rotating basis. In addition to publishing the International Journal of Stroke, WSO conducts a variety of activities, such as the World Stroke Campaign (October 29 is the World Stroke Day) and the World Stroke Academy as an educational tool. Three to four members are dispatched from the Japan Stroke Society (academic) and the Japan Stroke Association (patient support organization) to serve as councilors in their respective fields.
Asia Pacific Stroke Organization (APSO) was established in 2009 to advance stroke knowledge, promote research, and improve stroke treatment in Asia and Oceanic region. Asian Stroke Society (its annual meeting named as APCAS, established in 2004) and Asian Stroke Forum (ASF, established in Japan in 2005). The Japan Stroke Society is the main support society of APSO. The annual Asia Pacific Stroke Conference is held on a rotating basis in each country. And APSC has been held in Tokyo (2012) and Kobe (scheduled for 2025) in Japan. There are many countries belonging to APSO, from Japan to Saudi Arabia, respectively in the east and west, and from Australia to Mongolia in the north and south. There are also many countries that have difficulty participating in the APSC due to the wide gap in medical resources and social conditions. APSO supports CME programs in each country and holds webinars three times a year and conducts other activities tailored to regional characteristics.
