As Japan enters an era of an aging population and high mortality rates, medical care will become increasingly complex, requiring not only medical treatment but also nursing care. The field of neurology, in particular, often focuses on the elderly, and there are limits to what neurologists can do on their own. Effective medical care requires collaboration with various staff members. Team–based medical care is not simply a matter of having multiple professionals involved ; it requires sharing information and working toward the same goals. This is partly due to the nature of each specialty, but the very fact that multiple staff members with different values are involved is important for understanding the patient's values. Decision–making support also becomes increasingly challenging as it must consider various factors, but even in such cases, it is important to address them through a multidisciplinary team, as recommended by national guidelines. In Japanese culture, there are situations where it is difficult for non–medical professionals to contact physicians, so neurologists are expected to understand such backgrounds and actively collaborate with others.
