Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of using a temporary removable denture during the implant healing period.

Materials and Methods : We examined cases satisfying all of the following five conditions treated from April 2002 to March 2015 in the implant clinic at the University Hospital : 1) the Brånemark implant system was used (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden), 2) there were more than three continuous tooth defects, 3) more than two implants were inserted, 4) a two stage approach was selected, and 5) there was no rough surface exposure and no bone grafting during the implant surgery. The following factors were investigated : age, sex, upper jaw or lower jaw, use of a temporary removable denture during the healing period, early failure of implant, implant residual ratio and bone resorption up to the second surgery.

Results : 177 implant cases were investigated. The total number of implants was 595. Mean age was 61.7±9.8 years old (male 63.7±8.0 years, female 60.0±10.8 years). The implant residual ratio was 97.5% in the temporary removable denture group and 99.6% in the non-denture group ; a statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups. The bone resorption ratio was 9.2% in the denture group and 0.4% in the non-denture group ; a statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups. The relationship between the use of a temporary removable denture and sex/lower or upper jaw did not affect the bone resorption around the implant.

Conclusions : It was confirmed that the use of a temporary removable denture during the implant healing period decreased the implant residual ratio and increased the bone resorption around implants. For osseointegration and prevention of bone resorption for implants, it is important to avoid using a temporary removable denture during the implant healing period.
