The effects and complications associated with cisplatin and peplomycin combination chemotherapy (CP therapy) are reported. Nine patients with head and neck cancer were treated as follows : cisplatin (75 mg/body) was administered by intravenous infusion continuously for 24 h, followed by continuous peplomycin (5 mg/body) intravenous infusion for 5 h per day for 2 or 6 days.
A complete response (CR) was attained in 2 patients and a partial response (PR) in 5. Complications observed were : leukocytopenia (7), anemia (6), nausea or vomiting (4), renal disorder (4), fever (2), increased serum transaminase levels (6) and hair loss (3) .
It is concluded that CP therapy was effective and safe as neo-adjuvant treatment for patients with head and neck cancer.
