The High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials (HFLSM) was established in April 1981 in the Research Institute for Iron, Steel and Other Metals, Tohoku University, for the developmental research on superconducting materials which would be used for superconducting magnets for plasma confinements in fusion reactors. Its main facilities consist of three hybrid magnets up to 30 T with inner bores of 32 to 52 mm. Cooperative research programs are under way in a nation-wide scale. Design concepts of hybrid magnets are discussed in detail. The present status of our hybrid magnet system is also described. The current situation of hybrid magnets in the world is briefly reviewed.
