Abstract
The development status of large superconducting coils for the next large fusion reactor is reviewed. Technical objectives are the construction of 12-T DC toroidal coils with the height of about 10 m and that of 8-12-T pulsed poloidal coils with the diameter from 2 to 25 m. The total stored energy of the coil system will be 20-40 GJ. Through a systematic development for toroidal coils, 12-T technology and large coil technology have been achieved by the Cluster Test Program and the Large Coil Task respectively. For the pulsed poloidal coils, new programs have been started in Japan and in Euratom. Some implications for the reactor design based on the present achievements are also described.
