ITER-Related Physics R and D Programmes were set up in two steps: The first programme during the part of the ITER Conceptual Design Phase (1989-1990) was generated, and results have been reported. The second programme, long-term physics R & D programme, is being developed to provide the data base necessary for supporting the decision to start ITER construction and will be carried out in parallel with the ITER Engineering Design (1991-1995).
