Abstract
The photosynthetic activity would be largely affected by the division/regeneration of chloroplast. Chlorella contains only one chloroplast per cell so that the cell division is always accompanied by the chloroplast division. We investigated the changes in the chlorophylls, low-temperature fluorescence and P700 contents during the growth of Chlorella heterotrophically cultivated in the dark. (1) By HPLC analysis, two derivatives of oxidized Chl a were detected especially at the log phase of the growth. (2) Low-temperature fluorescence of Chl a shows that F685 was prominent at the early log phase, while F725 became prominent at the late stationary phase. (3) P700 was hardly detected at the early log phase. The Chl a/P700 ratio was about 100 at the early stationary phase, reaching about 300 at the late stationary phase. (4) These results indicate that Chl a is not properly incorporated into the membranes during divided/regenerated period of chloroplast.
