We present here a good example of metabolic engineering of plants through modifying biochemical pathway, leading to stress resistant plants. The ectopic-expression of OsHCTR in rice promoted the level of NAD (P)(H) through up-regulating enzymes required for NAD biosynthesis. Elevated level of nicotinamide nucleotide would serve as a pool of redox substances needed for quenching ROS effects. Transgenic rice plants showed tolerance to oxidative stress induced by H2O2, UV-C irradiation, oxygen stress, and rice blast pathogen. Nitrogen assimilation is an essential metabolic pathway that includes the primary fixation of ammonia to carbon skeletons to biosynthesize amino acids and other organic compounds involving nitrogen in plants. The great utility of transcription factors in modulating plant metabolism to generate crops having superior characters will be presented.
