Abstract
We have reported existence of the toxic effect of hydroxyl ion on root elongation and water absorption in rice and tomato. In this paper, we compared these toxic effects among Suaeda salsa, which is preferably grown on high pH soils, rice and tomato.
The growth inhibition was induced by hydroxyl ion at the pH above 10 in all three species, whereas root elongation wasn't inhibited in S.salsa at pH9 during 8days treatment, in contrast to rice and tomato. Water absorption per shoot dry weight was inhibited in S.salsa at pH above 9. However, the water absorption at pH9 and 10 recovered immediately after S.salsa was returned to growth medium at pH6. The recovery potential for water absorption in S.salsa was higher than in tomato, but lower than in rice. The tolerant mechanisms of S.salsa for inhibition of root elongation induced by high concentrations of hydroxyl ion will be also discussed.
