Abstract
Relationships between ecosystem services and plant growth can be identified by connecting genomic information of component organisms with metabolic systems. Tools that advance the understanding of ecosystem surrounding plants from the perspective of genome and metabolome are an important aspect of the emerging systems approach to plant biological science. We present here an approach designated "ECOMICS" to clarify such relationships between heterogeneous omics datasets. A genomic approach, by using ribosomal RNA sequences, enables taxonomic classification of prokaryotes and eukaryotes. A metabolomic approach enables construction of databases by chemical phenotyping. An integral approach between the two omics datasets enables trans-omics analysis in an environmental sample by depicting a correlation map based on the datasets. By applying such approaches to a time-serial dataset of genome sequences and NMR spectra in an environment surrounding plants, association between information on environmental genome and plant biomass can be executed, leading to the knowledge to understand plant metabolic systems. The ECOMICS service is available at https://database.riken.jp/ecomics/.
