The fundamental point of remote sensing is based on the following facts; a plant leaf reflects and transmits incident radiation in a manner that is uniquely characteristic of pigmented cells containing water solutions.
In Japan, the interptatation of remote sensing is necessary to measure the spectral reflectance of domestic plants.
In this paper, we discussed the spectral reflectance of plants with the following points; 1) moisture content, 2) growth stage, 3) leaf density, 4) the right side and the back side of the leaf, 5) species, and 6) leaf vigor.
The typical spectral reflectance, transmittance and absorptance curve of the Miscanthus sp. is shown in Fig.1. The striking differences are in the following bands (manometer) ; 540, 660, 750, 1, 440, 1, 650, 1, 930 and 2, 200.
We can see that the absorption of 1, 440 nm and 1, 650 nm is caused by the moisture content of the leaf because the absorption curve of dry leaves does not increase at 1, 440 nm and 1, 650 nm. In the near infra-red band the reflectance of four leaf layers increased much more than that of a one leaf layer. We can interprete the leaf density from infra-red film using the reflectance of leaf layers.
