Abstract
Background: The quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS) education has been a focus of concern in research and practice. In the era of competency-based education, it is necessary to review the validity of the original competencies at the time of graduation in the QIPS domain.
Methods: We identified the competencies in the QIPS domain of the major core competencies at graduation in four countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia) and compared with the current version of the model core curriculum (MCC) for medical education in Japan.
Results: Of the 130 items, 37 were described in "Management of Quality and Safety of Medical Care" domain (A-6) of the MCC, while 67 were included in other domains. Furthermore, we found an additional 26 items related to quality improvement that were not included in the MCC. In the MCC, the QIPS domain mainly covered the responses to accidents, while there was room to include various quality improvement activities.
