This study determined how perceived distance from one’s future self affects willingness to learn and satisfaction with college among college students and, consequently, their preparatory activity for the future. To measure satisfaction with college, motivation to study, sense of distance from future self, and future preparation activities for job-hunting, a total of 118 undergraduate students completed a self-reported questionnaire. Path analysis revealed that perceived proximity to the future self-facilitated academic motivation and enhanced future clarity. Additionally, higher levels of vividness about the future promoted more preparation and planned actions for the future. However, while academic motivation increased satisfaction with college, the latter had no effect on vividness about the future or preparatory activities. These results suggest that college students’ academic motivation is essential to perceive proximity to their future self. The limitations of this study and the influence of students’ satisfaction with college on readiness for the future were also discussed.
