Abstract
In recent years there has been increased interest in composite structure bridges because of the possibility of using each material optimally as appropriate to achieve a design superior to that possible with any single material. The purpose of this research was to investigate a comprehensive approach to composite bridge design including overall structural aspects, and detail construction of the steel/concrete joint. In conclusion, it was found that optimisation of composile bridge characteristics may be achieved by, 1)the use of volume at the steel/ concrete joint to provide a visual impression of weight, and 2) envelopment of the bridge girders to provide the most effective structural connection between the steel and concrete.
