Abstract
Through careful surveys on the attribution of temporary elements in pedestrian spaces in commercial districts, as well as on their hourly changes in kind and number, we have attempted to obtaine some clues for planning pedestrian spaces. The survey was conducted twice, in January and in May, in Chiba City. The results showed that regardless of the day of the week, temporary elements appear most frequently during the 12 : OO-18 : OO time period, and their quantitative changes are proportionate to the changes in pedestrian traffic. The Chiba findings are different from those obtained in the Gi-lou spaces in Taiwan, suggesting that pedestrian spaces in commercial districts are closely related to local customs as well as commercial activities.
