Abstract
The purpose of this research is to reconsider the fundamental aspects of Japanese typesetting. The results showed as follows. 1.The actual usage of typographical signs in periodicals and books in literature of from 1887 to 1896 during the Meiji poriod were grasped. 2. Books written in classical Chinese and its usage of punctuation had a major influence over the way of using them in Japan. 3. There are some effective and attractive, although they are in the primitive form, of typographical signs in the Meiji period's prints.
