Abstract
The Atayal belt-weaving instrument can be classified as a variety of handloom, with no heddle, a plain-weave arrangement, which utilizes a stationary warp-thread system. Yet, despite a sexual division of labor regarding weaving, from the fact that, in the Atayal, men weave using this instrument, can we not infer both that the belt-weaving instrument is not looked upon as a loom, and that the belts made thereby are not considered to be weaving per se. On the contrary, both belts and the belt-weaving instrument are thought to pertain to tools. Inspite of this fact, it can most assurably be said that the belt-weaving instrument is a precious traditional lifestyle craft.
