Abstract
Japanese lacquer artist, Sugawara taught lacquer art to Eileen Gray, and influenced her works. But, former writings about him are fragmented and partial. His real name, birthplace, lacquer art activity still remain unclear. This study attempt to clarify his personal history corectly by means of visiting his bereaved family and refering to public document .Following facts become clear. Janualy 29,1884,He was born in Sakata-City, Yamagata Prefecture. His full name is Seizo Sugawara. He accompanied Japanese lacquer artist, Shoka Tujimura to Paris in 1905 or 1906. He taught lacquer art to artists in Paris, and he consistently protected traditional technique of Japanese lacquer art April, 12,1937,he died in Paris.
