Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the classification of the ornamental designs of the samurai costumes and the correlation of the samurai Costumes with the kosode designs in the early Edo period. In conclusion, I have identified the seven main tendencies of samurai costumes: 1) Composition employing a large single motif. 2) Dual composition of a main surface pattern overlaying a background pattern. 3) Composition of a shoulder and tail form arranged a single motif in a middle.4) Continuous form of horizontal and oblique striped patterns. 5) Composition arranging a middle motif. 6) Composition of full patterns. 7) Composition of plain patterns.
