Abstract
This study concerns the development of Gothic types in the ninteenth-century U. S. A., focusing on the formation of American Type Founders Company, the biggest type vendor which was consolidated from twenty-three small foundries. It refers the old-taste Gothic types, produced by regional foundries, that aquired lower-case and Italic characters. Then it makes clear the process of amalgamation of foundries into ATF Company which had newly organised type design section. Last it concerns the work of Morris Fuller Benton and his type desgin especially about Gothic types including Franklin Gothic (1902), Alternate Gothic (1903), News Gothic (1908), and Lightline Gothic (1908).
